This study investigates how short story writing can be integrated into the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) curriculum to consolidate students’ knowledge of the language and enhance their creative writing skills. It aims to understand students’ experiences in writing both fictional and non-fictional short stories.

Data were collected from the short stories written electronically by students during an English course, in addition to their responses to a post-task questionnaire. An explanatory sequential mixed-method research design was adopted, where both qualitative and quantitative data were obtained through thematic analysis and descriptive statistics of the short stories written by the participants. Qualitative data were also derived from students’ perceptions based on their questionnaire responses.

The findings indicate that short story writing effectively reinforced students’ prior knowledge of English, encouraged them to engage in imaginative and creative writing, and contributed to breaking the monotony of traditional classroom teaching methods.
